The Best Outdoor Family Photo Locations in Stafford, Fredericksburg & Northern VA

One of the first questions families ask when booking a session is:

“Where should we take our photos?”

The good news? From Stafford to Northern Virginia, we have some absolutely beautiful outdoor locations that photograph perfectly for warm, candid family sessions.

Here are some of my favorite spots.

1. Government Island – Stafford, VA

If you love tall grasses, soft greenery, and dreamy golden light, Government Island is a gorgeous choice.

Why families love it:

  • Beautiful walking trails
  • Open space for kids to move naturally
  • Glowy sunset light
  • Wooded textures for variety

It’s relaxed, scenic, and close to home for Stafford families.

2. Chatham Manor – Fredericksburg, VA

Chatham Manor offers a timeless, elegant backdrop with historic architecture and manicured gardens overlooking the river.

Best for:

  • Maternity sessions
  • Dressier outfits
  • Spring blooms and fall foliage

It gives a classic feel while still allowing for candid connection.

3. Old Mill Park – Fredericksburg, VA

This location offers so much variety:

  • River views
  • Open fields
  • Large trees
  • Soft golden-hour light

Perfect for families with toddlers who need space to explore.

4. Alum Spring Park – Fredericksburg, VA

If you’re drawn to a more woodsy, cozy vibe, Alum Spring Park is beautiful year-round with bridges, creeks, and lush greenery.

It’s especially gorgeous in fall.

Northern Virginia Favorites

If you're open to heading a little further north, these locations are incredible for wide-open views and dramatic light.

5. Manassas National Battlefield Park – Manassas, VA

This is one of my favorite Northern Virginia locations for families who love:

  • Rolling open fields
  • Tall grasses
  • Expansive skies
  • Stunning sunset glow

It’s ideal for golden hour sessions and gives a soft, airy, countryside feel — especially beautiful in late summer and fall.

5. Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park - Bristow, VA

Bristoe Station is a hidden gem with:

  • Open meadows
  • Rusting fencing
  • Wooded edges
  • Beautiful fall colors

It's quieter than some other Northern Virginia parks and works wonderfully for families who want natural, relaxed portraits without heavy crowds.

6. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens – Vienna, VA

If you’re dreaming of florals, manicured gardens, and variety in one location, Meadowlark is stunning.

Best for:

  • Spring and early summer sessions
  • Maternity portraits
  • Families wanting a more polished garden look

Keep in mind: this location requires a photography permit.

7. Great Falls Park – Great Falls, VA

For something dramatic and unique, Great Falls offers:

  • Water views
  • Rock formations
  • Wooded trails
  • Gorgeous fall color

It’s beautiful but does involve more walking, so it's best for families with older children.

8. Jones Point Park - Alexandria, VA

Jones Point Park is perfect for families wanting a mix of:

  • Water views along the Potomac
  • Skyline glimpses
  • Wooded paths
  • Soft evening light

It's especially beautiful at sunset and works well for families closer to Alexandria or Arlington who want a waterfront feel without heading far outside the city.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Family

The “best” location really depends on:

  • The season
  • Your kids’ ages
  • How dressy you want to be
  • Whether you prefer fields, gardens, or wooded backdrops

As a Stafford and Northern Virginia family photographer, I help every client choose a spot that matches their vision and keeps the experience relaxed and stress-free.

Because at the end of the day, the location sets the scene — but your connection is what makes the photos meaningful.

When Should You Book?

For Northern Virginia and Stafford:

  • Spring sessions: Book January–March
  • Fall sessions: Book by July (especially for Manassas Battlefield — those sunsets book fast!)
  • Holiday card photos: Plan October sessions

Golden hour always gives that warm, glowing light families love most.
